Pick'em or survivor?

PICK'EM

Runs all season, forgives a bad week

You pick every game and collect points. A terrible Sunday costs you position and nothing else, and you can start in Week 8 having missed nothing. It's the one to play if you want something to do every week rather than something to survive.

SURVIVOR

One pick a week, and it can end fast

One team a week, never the same team twice, and a single loss can knock you out until next season. It's more tense and more social — and it's private and invite-only, so it's the one to run with a specific group of friends. There's a full guide at /survivor.

What you don't have to do

Keep a spreadsheet. Scoring happens on its own as games finish.
Chase anyone for picks. There's no commissioner and nothing to administer.
Remember a deadline. Each game locks itself at its own kickoff, not at a single weekly cutoff.
Pay anything. It's free. No entry fee, no payout, no sportsbook.

Common questions

How does NFL pick'em work?

Each week you pick the winner of every game on the slate. Every correct pick is a point, and the leaderboard sorts on the total. There's no elimination and no penalty for a bad week — you just try to beat your own record and everyone else's.

Can I start in the middle of the season?

Yes, and this is the main reason to play pick'em rather than survivor. Survivor pools are effectively closed once Week 1 has been played — you can't join something you've already been eliminated from. Pick'em resets every week, so Week 8 is as good a place to start as Week 1.

When do picks lock?

At kickoff of each game, enforced on the server rather than in the app — so a slow phone or a clock that's a minute out can't sneak a pick in after a game has started.

Do I have to pick every game?

Pick as many as you like. Unpicked games simply score nothing, which matters mostly in the late-season weeks when a few games are meaningless to everybody.

What's the difference between pick'em and a survivor pool?

In pick'em you pick every game and accumulate points, and a bad week costs you position but never your place. In survivor you pick one team a week, you can never reuse a team, and a single loss can knock you out for the season. Survivor is tense and short for most people; pick'em runs all year.

Is there a private pool for just my friends?

Not for pick'em — it's one open leaderboard that everybody plays on. If you want a contest that's just your group, that's what survivor pools and wins pools are for: those are private, invite-only, and run by whoever sets them up.

Does it cost anything?

No. There are no entry fees, no payouts and no payments anywhere in Tākaro. It's a free sports app, not a sportsbook.

Want something private, just for your group?

Survivor pool. Invite-only, one pick a week, last one standing. See /survivor.
Wins pool. Draft NFL teams in your group chat and let the app keep score. See /wins.

There's a slate this week.

Nothing to catch up on and nothing to pay. Pick a few games and see how you do.
